Kenya Unveils AI for Disability Project to Drive Inclusive Digital Growth

Kenya has taken a decisive step toward inclusive digital growth with the launch of the AI for Disability Project. The initiative aims to integrate persons living with disabilities (PWDs) into the country’s fast-evolving digital ecosystem.

Leaders unveiled the project at the Connected Africa Summit 2026, signaling a shift in how the country designs and deploys technology.

For years, innovation has overlooked PWDs.
Developers often added accessibility features later.
Now, Kenya is changing that approach.

A Shift Toward Inclusive Innovation

The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy leads the initiative. It is working with the Kenya Institute of Special Education, inABLE, and AT4D Trust.

The government has also partnered with Huawei and Qhala. Together, they will develop scalable hardware and software solutions for PWDs.

Importantly, the project focuses on building accessibility into technology from the start. This approach will deliver more practical and user-friendly solutions.

Local Innovation and Manufacturing Drive Scale

The government has set up a manufacturing plant at KISE headquarters. The facility will produce and distribute assistive devices locally.

This move will cut import costs. It will also make devices more affordable.

At the same time, local innovators will lead software development and system upgrades. They will use infrastructure such as the KZA data centre and digital hubs.

The initiative also promotes standardized digital systems across Africa. This will improve access and usability across borders.

For example, a Kenyan PWD can travel to Malawi and use familiar systems without difficulty.

Ultimately, the AI for Disability Project goes beyond technology. It expands access, creates opportunity, and places inclusion at the centre of Kenya’s digital transformation.
