The Africa Feature Network Launches 1,000KM Charity Run
The Africa Feature Network has officially launched the “Miles for Meals and Dignity” 1,000-kilometre run challenge, a nationwide advocacy and fundraising campaign aimed at addressing child hunger in schools and period poverty among girls across Kenya.
The campaign, scheduled to run from September 14 to October 10, 2026, will begin in Kilifi County and conclude in Busia County, covering approximately 1,000 kilometres across several regions in the country.
The endurance run will be led by Peter Aowa alongside partner organisations, athletes, fitness communities, youth groups, institutions, and individual participants who will join various stages of the journey through organised community runs.
Speaking during the official announcement in Nairobi, the organisation said the initiative seeks to mobilise resources and drive conversations around practical solutions to challenges affecting vulnerable learners in Kenya.
According to the organisers, the campaign targets raising KES 13 million to support two major initiatives aimed at improving learning conditions and restoring dignity among school-going children.
Supporting Learners Beyond the Classroom
The first initiative is a School Feeding Programme that aims to support 1,000 learners across six primary schools in three counties for one academic year.
The second initiative, dubbed the Pad a Girl Initiative, seeks to provide sanitary towels and menstrual health support to 5,000 school-going girls along the campaign route.
The organisation noted that many children continue reporting to school hungry, affecting concentration, attendance, and academic performance. At the same time, thousands of girls still miss classes because sanitary products remain unaffordable for many households.
“As The Africa Feature Network, we strongly believe journalism should not end at highlighting problems alone. Media and advocacy platforms also have a responsibility to help drive conversations around practical responses, community participation, and sustainable solutions,” the organisation said during the launch.
Community Runs and National Activations
Participants will register under 5-kilometre, 10-kilometre, 15-kilometre, and 20-kilometre categories at different stages of the campaign.
Major public activation events will take place in Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, and Eldoret, featuring awareness activities, media engagements, and community mobilisation events.
The official registration portal for institutions, schools, universities, corporates, fitness clubs, and individual participants will open on May 29, 2026.
The campaign also introduces a sustainability model through School Green Labs, where participating schools will support local food production while collaborating with nearby farmers and women groups as part of the programme supply chain.
Call for Partnerships and Sponsorships
The launch also marked the beginning of the campaign’s partnership and sponsorship drive.
Africa Feature Network is now inviting corporations, financial institutions, county governments, media houses, development partners, universities, and members of the public to support the initiative through sponsorships, logistical assistance, media partnerships, and in-kind contributions.
The organisation said operational support for the run will largely rely on strategic partnerships to ensure funds raised go directly towards programme implementation and beneficiary support.
The campaign aims to combine advocacy, storytelling, public participation, and direct community support while creating measurable social impact across the country.
