Britam Connect Launches Heshima Farewell Plan to Ease Funeral Costs

Britam Connect has partnered with Montezuma Funeral Home to introduce the Heshima Farewell Plan, a last-expense policy designed to help Kenyan families manage the rising cost of funerals.

The new offering comes at a time when funeral expenses continue to climb across the country. In cities such as Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu, costs can exceed KSh300,000. Even in rural areas, families face increasing pressure from transport, mortuary fees, catering and burial arrangements.

Moving beyond cash payouts

Unlike traditional funeral cover, the Heshima Farewell Plan combines financial support with fully managed funeral services. Through the partnership, families receive end-to-end assistance from mortuary services and transport to caskets, obituary support and funeral programmes.

The plan has received approval from the Insurance Regulatory Authority and covers both natural and accidental death.

Speaking during the launch, Evah Kimani said the product is designed to reduce the financial strain that often comes with loss.

“The burden of funeral expenses continues to challenge many families in Kenya. With the Heshima Farewell Plan, we aim to ease this burden and encourage people to plan for the unexpected,” she said.

Affordable options for families

Data from the Association of Kenya Insurers shows that funeral costs for middle-income households range between KSh50,000 and KSh300,000, highlighting the need for accessible insurance solutions.

To address this, the Heshima plan offers flexible options:

  • Basic cover: KSh100,000 at KSh1,000 annually
  • Standard cover: KSh150,000 at KSh1,400 annually
  • Executive cover: KSh300,000 at KSh1,700 annually
  • Premium cover: KSh500,000 at KSh1,850 annually

The policy covers applicants aged 18 to 70 years, with renewable benefits up to age 80. It also extends to children, students, parents and in-laws, making it suitable for extended family structures common in Kenya.

Josh Karuga said the partnership will ensure families receive both emotional and logistical support during bereavement.

“We see firsthand the emotional and financial strain families go through. This partnership allows us to support them more holistically,” he noted.

Driving insurance adoption

Despite growing demand, funeral insurance uptake in Kenya remains low. Many families still rely on informal welfare groups or community contributions to raise funds.

With this launch, Britam Connect aims to shift that narrative by making funeral planning more accessible and structured. The move also builds on its earlier partnership with Francis Funeral Home in Busia, as the company expands its footprint in the micro-insurance space.

As funeral costs continue to rise, solutions like the Heshima Farewell Plan could play a critical role in helping families plan ahead offering not just financial relief, but peace of mind when it matters most.
