Grade 10 Learners Debut at National Drama Festival Under CBE
Grade 10 learners have taken centre stage at the Kenya National Drama and Film Festival for the first time. This marks a major shift under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.
Speaking at Kagumo Teachers Training College, Charles Ong’ondo said the move sets a new benchmark for future learners.
“This is the first year we have Grade 10 learners participating. We are excited to see them perform, both in solo and group items,” he said.
He added that their performances will form part of continuous assessment. This means drama and film now go beyond co-curricular activities.
CBE expands learning beyond the classroom
Education Director General Elyas Abdi Jillaow said the festival builds key skills. These include critical thinking, creativity, communication and teamwork.
He warned schools against blocking learners from participating. He said all students, regardless of pathway, must take part in co-curricular activities.
“In CBE, a student in STEM should still engage in drama, sports or music. No learner should be excluded,” he said.
The festival has attracted over 120,000 participants. These include learners from pre-primary to university, as well as TVET and special needs institutions.

Technology shapes creativity on stage
This year’s theme focuses on digital transformation in theatre and film. The sub-theme, supported by Equity Bank, highlights how technology is changing banking.
Christopher Joseph Odhiambo urged schools to interpret the theme creatively.
“We guide the theme, but schools choose how to present it. We want stories that reflect real social and economic issues,” he said.
Peter Ndoro said technology is shaping the future of young people.
“Technology is a powerful equaliser. It is changing how people access financial services and build their future,” he said.
The festival reflects a broader shift in education. It shows that creativity and practical skills now matter as much as academic performance.
