Jack Mutinda on Landing His Breakout Role in Mizani
He walks into a room with quiet intensity. Jack Mutinda known to fans as Hulk Shira carries the presence of someone built for action roles.
The award-winning actor first gained recognition for his role in Itafiki, which earned him a Kalasha Award. His credits also include Real Househelps of Kawangware, Sayari, and It’s a Free Country.
Now, he is commanding attention as Solo in Mizani, the crime drama airing on Maisha Magic Plus. The show follows a journalist whose daughter is kidnapped by an organ trafficking ring. Solo, a former Special Forces officer, serves as both protector and enforcer.
The role has already earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 2026 Kalasha Awards.
A Role That Almost Slipped Away
Mutinda admits the journey to landing Solo was far from smooth.
“I missed the first auditions in Mombasa and the callbacks in Nairobi,” he says. “I thought I had lost it.”
Then came an unexpected call from Daudi Anguka’s team. He submitted an online audition and secured the role days later.
“It didn’t sink in until I was on a bus to Mombasa for the shoot,” he recalls. “I even missed the SGR train. I had to improvise, but I made it.”

Built for Action
Beyond acting, Mutinda has built a strong reputation as a stunt performer. Fitness plays a central role in his career.
“Working out is a lifestyle for me,” he says. “To do stunts, you need to be fit and fearless.”
He has trained in karate for years and began his stunt career in 2018. One highlight includes working on the global series Sense8, where he collaborated with experienced stunt professionals.
He believes Kenya’s stunt industry holds untapped potential. “We need more growth and more women in the space. There’s so much opportunity.”
Bringing Solo to Life
Mutinda brought authenticity to Solo through both physicality and collaboration. He even co-choreographed some action scenes with co-star Michael Saruni.
“When your scene partner pushes you to go all out, it elevates everything,” he says. “It makes the action feel real.”
His on-screen chemistry with Anita Wawuda also stands out. The two shift seamlessly between intense emotional scenes and high-stakes confrontations.
“It felt natural from day one,” he says. “That made even the toughest scenes easier.”
Life Beyond the Screen
Away from set, Mutinda keeps busy. He spends time in the gym, creates content on YouTube, and works on car restoration projects.
His current project is a 1988 Toyota Corolla E90, which he is rebuilding from the ground up.
“I’m turning it into a modern machine,” he says.
Owning His Craft
Unlike many actors, Mutinda enjoys watching his own performances.
“I love it,” he says. “I watch, critique, and learn. I’m my biggest critic, but I also appreciate the work.”
For him, Mizani stands out as a defining moment. From intense action scenes to weeks of filming in Diani, the experience pushed him both professionally and personally.
“It was one of the greatest experiences of my life,” he says.
