Small Water Pans

National Irrigation Authority is implementing household water harvesting irrigation program by constructing small water pans for free to individual farmers in various counties across the country.

National Irrigation Authority Chief executive officer Gitonga Mugambi says the program is meant to harvest surface runoff to help farmers carry out supplementary irrigation activities throughout the year instead of waiting for the unpredictable rains.

There are over 2000 water pans already constructed and more are set to be completed which Gitonga says will help boost irrigation and enhance food security.

Mugambi adds “We are working closely with county governments (Local leadership) to identify priority areas within the counties that are more deserving. We expect the farmers to use the provided pans to grow their own food”

Beneficiaries have lauded the initiative saying they have changed their lives after investing in irrigation.

Gitonga has urged farmers to fence the pans and use them appropriately for longer services.
