Bobi Wine Interview Cut Short As Military Raid His Home

Uganda’s presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine was on Tuesday forced to end his interview with a local radio station, Hot 96, prematurely after the military allegedly raided his Kampala home.

“So I am sorry even right now as we speak, we are being raided by the military. I have to end the interview because I can see soldiers beating up my security guards. I have to go down and give it attention,” Bobi Wine told Hot 96 broadcasting from Nairobi, before ending the call.

Bobi took to his Twitter saying “The army has this morning raided my home, arrested all my security guards and anyone they could see around my premises. No reason for the arrest was given. Such acts of impunity are all kicks of a dying horse,”

He added “Gen. Museveni needs to tell the world what he intends to do in this election that he should arrest my entire campaign team, my assistants & supporters. Last night, the military yet again arrested so many friends and comrades; two days to the election,”

What is expected?

On Thursday Ugandans will vote in a general election after a campaign marked by violence that has killed dozens of people.

President Yoweri Museveni is seeking his sixth elected term in office after 35 years in power. The 76-year-old faces 10 challengers, most notably the pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine.

Human rights groups have accused security forces of using excessive force to break up opposition rallies during the campaign. But the government says strong measures are necessary to ensure people comply with a ban on large crowds imposed to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.
