KALRO Urges Media to Drive Climate Resilience

The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) has called on the media to take a leading role in building climate resilience.

It urged stronger collaboration between journalists, scientists, and policymakers to ensure accurate and timely sharing of weather and climate information.

Media as a Key Partner in Climate Action

Speaking at the opening of a Media Training Workshop on the Interpretation and Dissemination of Weather and Climate Information Services, Dr. Floridah Maritim, Director of Corporate Communication at KALRO, praised the media for its dedication.

The workshop was held under the Enhancing Climate Resilience in East Africa (ECREA) Project.

“We gather here at a time when the realities of climate change are no longer abstract,” Dr. Maritim said.

Additionally, she cited erratic rainfall, prolonged droughts, and extreme weather events as growing threats to agriculture, livelihoods, and development.

She stressed that weather and climate information must be delivered promptly and in a way that people can act upon.

Scientific data, she added, is essential but needs translation into formats the public can understand and trust. This is where the media plays an unmatched role.

Strengthening Communication for Farmers’ Benefit

KALRO works with scientists, county agricultural offices, policymakers, and journalists to ensure climate-smart research reaches farmers.

Through the ECREA project, it has invested in platforms that provide farmers with advisories, forecasts, and early warnings.

Dr. Maritim noted that the media’s ability to tell stories, educate the public, and hold institutions accountable is vital.

The workshop aimed to equip journalists with skills to interpret weather data, frame impactful climate stories, and amplify the voices of vulnerable communities.

She reaffirmed KALRO’s commitment to inclusive, evidence-based communication grounded in farmers’ realities.

In conclusion, she noted that the event is part of a broader mission to strengthen climate resilience in Kenya and East Africa, “one story, one broadcast, and one article at a time.”
