Shock As Snake Attends Funeral Of A Medicine Man In Baringo.

The huge python emerged and made trips between his house and his grave as though it was paying him last respect just two days after William Ewoi was interred at his home. The reptile was so focused that it was not rattled by the noise of the villagers who had shown up at Ewoi’s home to witness the startling scene.

It is believed that the python’s appearance was a form of appreciation and respect to the serpent handler for the good care and protection he offered snakes. Weighing in on the incident, the family of the 86-year-old snake master said the visit by the reptile was a sign of good luck.

Ewoi’s son Vincent Ewoi, welcomed the incident saying it was a sign that their late father, who loved snakes, had ‘returned’ home. Vincent said before his father’s death, he had said the snake would make an appearance.

Vincent further debunked the common perception that, snake handlers are witches or sorcerous. Instead, he said his father would capture snakes, milk their venom and showcase the reptile to tourists who visited Lake Baringo.

“This is not witchcraft at all because as a family, snakes have been our main source of livelihood. Our father used to trade in them and trained us to feed and domesticate snakes,” said Vincent. The deceased’s wife, Easter Ewoi, said they would not kill the animal. She added that they would continue treating victims of snake bites just like William did.

William had been honoured by the National Museums of Kenya. He was described as a gifted freelance collector of reptiles. In a separate story, the family of the late Paul Chemng’ok had to comply with his instructions contained in his will which he decreed that he should not be buried with any form of fanfare nor grandeur. During his burial on Saturday, July 10, attended by hundreds of mourners, there was no modern coffin, preaching, reading of eulogy, speeches and no condolences.
