Women Leaders to Drive Kenya’s Tourism Rebrand for a Sustainable Future

Kenya’s tourism sector is undergoing a major repositioning, with women professionals leading the change.

The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife has formed a Taskforce on Repositioning the Kenya Brand through Tourism to Support Youth Employment in Travel and Tourism. Most of the members are women drawn from senior marketing, communications, and industry leadership roles.

Maryanne Musangi chairs the taskforce, with Monali Shah as vice-chairperson. Together, they will guide a team of brand custodians, chief marketing officers, and industry players to refresh the “Magical Kenya” brand. Their focus is to align it with global tourism trends, youth innovation, and sustainability.

Women at the Forefront of Change

The appointment highlights the expertise women leaders bring in brand strategy, customer engagement, and community development.

Members include Isabelle Rostom, Carolyne Kendi, Zizwe Awour, June Chepkemei, Simaloi Dajom, Nelly Wainaina, Serah Katusia, Rosalind Gichuru, Yvonne Ogwang, and Yvonne Tharao. Their presence demonstrates Kenya’s commitment to inclusive leadership.

Tourism CS Rebecca Miano emphasized that the sector’s success relies on balancing growth with sustainability and cultural authenticity. She noted that women leaders can bridge community priorities with global market demands, ensuring growth that is both competitive and sustainable.

Tourism as a Path to Jobs and Sustainability

Tourism contributes over 7% of Kenya’s GDP and supports 1.7 million jobs. Revenues could reach KSh. 1.2 trillion in 2025. The sector employs more youth and women than most other industries, making it central to inclusive economic growth.

The rebrand will expand these opportunities by opening new paths in eco-tourism, digital platforms, and community-based ventures.

By leading this initiative, women leaders will shape a brand identity built on authenticity, resilience, inclusivity, and innovation. Their leadership will enhance Kenya’s global tourism appeal and strengthen women’s role in driving national development.

Building a Future-Ready Brand

Launched in 2001, the “Magical Kenya” brand has served the country well but now faces challenges in a changing market. The new rebranding strategy targets evolving demographics, sustainability demands, and tech-savvy travelers.

With women steering the process, Kenya will deliver a future-ready tourism brand. The country projects 3 million international arrivals in 2025 and 5 million by 2027. This growth will create meaningful opportunities for young people across the country.

The rebrand represents more than an image refresh. It marks a women-led transformation of tourism into a sustainable, job-creating engine for Kenya’s future.
