Safaricom’s Purpose Beyond Profit Strategy Transforms Millions of Lives Across Kenya
Safaricom PLC is increasingly positioning itself as more than a telecommunications company, with new impact figures showing how its investments in education, healthcare, environmental sustainability and community empowerment continue transforming lives across Kenya.
As the company marks 25 years of operations, Safaricom says its long-term strategy remains anchored on integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its core business, while driving inclusive economic growth and sustainable development.
According to the company’s FY26 results, Safaricom and the M-PESA Foundation directly impacted 4.4 million lives through community programmes implemented across the country.
Education at the Centre of Long-Term Transformation
One of the company’s flagship initiatives, Citizens of the Future, continues to emerge as a key pillar in Safaricom’s social impact agenda.
The programme has already reached more than 3 million learners and now targets 6 million beneficiaries across 500 schools over the next five years.
The initiative focuses on improving access to quality education, digital learning tools, mentorship and future-ready skills for young people across Kenya.
Safaricom says the programme reflects the company’s broader belief that technology and connectivity can become powerful tools for social mobility and economic inclusion.

Expanding Healthcare Access
Healthcare also remained a major focus area during the financial year.
Through free medical camps organized by the M-PESA Foundation, Safaricom reached 72,883 people with essential healthcare services in underserved communities.
Additionally, the Uzazi Salama maternal health programme supported 8,063 mothers and children, helping improve access to maternal and child healthcare services in vulnerable regions.
The company says these interventions continue to address gaps in healthcare accessibility while strengthening community wellbeing.
Sustainability and Climate Action
Safaricom also continued accelerating its climate action agenda through renewable energy investments and circular economy initiatives.
Currently, 35.7 percent of the company’s network runs on green energy, supported by more than 2,000 solar-powered sites across the country.
In addition, Safaricom planted 3 million trees and achieved a 94 percent waste recycling rate during the year.
The company also recycled 352 tonnes of network waste as part of efforts to reduce environmental impact and promote responsible resource management.
These sustainability efforts earned Safaricom a Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) “A” Rating for the second consecutive year, making it one of the highest-rated companies globally on climate transparency and environmental leadership.
Balancing Growth and Impact
Safaricom says its approach demonstrates that commercial growth and social transformation are not mutually exclusive.
Instead, the company increasingly sees purpose-driven business as central to long-term sustainability, customer trust and national development.
Ultimately, Safaricom’s expanding social impact agenda reflects a growing shift among corporate institutions toward embedding sustainability, inclusion and community development into core business operations.
