Magoha’s Ministry Praises Meru Street Children’s Rehab Project
Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has seen his work recognized by the Ministry of Education through a continuous programme in the County that seeks to rehabilitate street children and equip them with skills.
The programme has been hailed as transformative, with other devolved units being urged to emulate the initiative.
Education Chief Administrative Secretary Zack Kinuthia said the Meru Youth Service (MYS) programme will address youth unemployment and solve the problem of street families.

Speaking during a pass-out parade for 147 former street children at the MYS training Centre in Egoji, Imenti South, where he was the chief guest, Kinuthia said “We have a problem of youth unemployment and street families in all towns across the country and devolved units should lead in addressing these challenges. Rather than looking at the youth as a ‘time bomb’ waiting to explode, we should look at them as opportunities to develop our country,”
The governor took to his Facebook page saying
“The lives of 147 youth who used to live in the streets commonly known as commandos/chokora and have passed out today at the Meru Youth Service (MYS) Igoji Training Centre after undergoing behavior change, mindset and skills training will be completely transformed. I pledged to empower our youth to liberate them from youth poverty, hopelessness, apathy and unemployment”

He added, “The transformed former street children will join Meru National Polytechnic for advanced skills training, others will join Agribusiness venture in partnership with my Government while the younger ones will be enrolled at Igoji Boarding Primary School. Those who have acquired painting and interior design skills will be involved in painting all government facilities”

“The 11 youths will receive Sh30,000 each which will be paid to the institution and Sh40,000 from the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb). This is the ministry’s commitment to this important programme,” Mr Kinuthia said.
