Only about 1.2 million Kenyans currently have access to fixed broadband. However, Safaricom estimates that the market potential stands at nearly four million users.

This gap presents a significant opportunity for growth in the country’s digital economy.

Key Growth Opportunities

Safaricom has identified three main areas to drive future expansion. These include fixed broadband, enterprise solutions, and increased engagement with the public sector.

According to Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa, Kenyans have a strong appetite for internet access. This demand makes the country ripe for expanded fibre optic rollout.

Expanding Fibre Access

Mr Ndegwa said the company sees major growth potential in both Kenya and Ethiopia. The focus is on increasing the number of customers connected to fixed broadband, commonly known as fibre.

Safaricom plans to move away from rigid pricing structures. Instead, it aims to introduce flexible payment options similar to mobile data bundles.

Customers would be able to choose daily, hourly, weekly, or monthly plans. This approach targets users who cannot afford standard monthly fibre packages.

“We believe that changing how we go to market will expand participation,” said Mr Ndegwa. He added that tiered pricing would also help reduce the cost of service delivery.

Untapped Market Potential

Despite growing demand, fixed broadband penetration remains low. Safaricom’s analysis shows that nearly three million potential users are yet to be reached.

If the company captures 40 per cent of this market, it could add about one million new customers. This would significantly grow its current base of just over 400,000 fixed broadband users.

“We could quadruple the business we have today within fixed,” Mr Ndegwa said.

Enterprise and Public Sector Growth

Beyond residential fibre, Safaricom sees strong opportunities in enterprise services. The company aims to attract more businesses to its internet offerings and bundled digital solutions.

The public sector also remains a key focus area. Safaricom continues to partner with the government as it advances the digitisation of public services across the country.
