Safaricom Surpasses 50 Million Customers
Prepares to Celebrate Silver Jubilee
A Milestone Built on Trust and Engagement
Safaricom PLC (NSE: SCOM) has reached a historic milestone, crossing the 50 million customer mark on its mobile network in Kenya. This achievement reflects 25 years of trust, loyalty, and partnership with Kenyans.
The growth is largely driven by a year-long customer engagement campaign. Through initiatives like Sambaza Furaha and M-PESA Sokoni, Safaricom brought rewards and services directly to customers across the country.
These interactions helped the company deepen its connection with users and show appreciation in a personal way.
“As we approach our silver jubilee in October 2025, we recommit to being a force for good and to creating what’s next for our customers,” said Dr. Peter Ndegwa, Group CEO, Safaricom PLC.

Safaricom Surpasses 50 Million Customers
From 17,000 to 50 Million: Powering Kenya’s Digital Journey
Safaricom began operations in 2000 with just 17,000 customers. Today, it serves over 50 million. This growth mirrors Kenya’s evolution into one of Africa’s most digitally connected societies.
It also reflects Safaricom’s continued investment in innovation and customer needs.
Over the past year, Safaricom has focused heavily on improving customer experience. The company’s activations brought joy and practical support to both urban and rural areas, strengthening relationships on the ground.
Meanwhile, Safaricom’s presence in Ethiopia has also grown rapidly. As of July 2025, it serves more than 10 million customers there.
This success highlights the company’s ambition to become Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030.
Driving Broader Impact
Safaricom’s contributions go far beyond connectivity. Since launching M-PESA, it has transformed mobile money in Kenya. Today, M-PESA offers a full range of financial services, savings, loans, insurance, and payments.
The company has also led network innovation. It introduced 3G, 4G, and 5G technologies and continues to expand high-speed internet to homes and businesses.
Economically, Safaricom is a major contributor. In the last financial year, it added KES 722 billion to the national economy and supported more than 1.28 million jobs.
Socially, the Safaricom and M-PESA Foundations have impacted over 8 million Kenyans. Their programs focus on education, healthcare, and economic empowerment, improving lives in every corner of the country.
Looking ahead, Dr. Ndegwa said, “Our next chapter will be about deepening impact, personalising experiences, and helping lead Kenya’s digital transformation.”
