Tech-Driven Security: Watu Rolls Out GPS Trackers for Bodaboda Riders
Nationwide Initiative to Curb Motorbike Theft
Watu, a pan-African asset finance company, has launched a countrywide initiative to install and repair GPS trackers on motorbikes. This effort aims to curb rising cases of theft and secure the livelihoods of thousands of boda boda riders across Kenya.
Strengthening Security for Riders
Boda bodas play a crucial role in Kenya’s transport sector, employing over 1.2 million riders and enhancing last-mile connectivity.
However, frequent motorbike theft poses a major challenge, threatening financial stability for riders and small businesses. Watu’s initiative integrates technology-driven solutions to enhance security and sustainability in the industry.
Enhancing Financial Inclusion
“Kenya’s boda boda sector is vital to urban mobility and economic growth. Watu’s investment in GPS tracking mirrors global trends in leveraging technology to improve transport security and financial inclusion,” said Chris Rumenda, Watu’s Head of Commercial, during a logbook issuance event.

Empowering Customers with Full Ownership
The initiative targets both current customers and those who have completed their loan repayments. Watu has also begun issuing logbooks to customers who have fully repaid their motorbike loans, ensuring complete ownership of their assets.

“We are streamlining the logbook collection process so customers can access their documents seamlessly. This strengthens their financial independence and expands their borrowing potential,” Rumenda added.
A Nationwide Logbook Distribution Drive
To date, Watu has launched a campaign to distribute over 70,000 uncollected logbooks. https://africabusinessnews.co.ke/watu-to-issue-logbooks-and-repair-phones-for-customers-in-malindi/Over the past two weeks, the company has issued logbooks in Malindi and Nakuru City. Many customers who have cleared their loans have not yet picked up their logbooks, limiting their ability to use motorcycles as collateral for future financing.
Collaborating with Law Enforcement
By combining GPS tracking with swift police response, Watu and law enforcement agencies have successfully disrupted cross-border theft syndicates. These efforts have been particularly effective in Kilifi, Taita Taveta, and Mombasa City, improving security for customers.
Watu’s Commitment to Innovation
Since 2015, Watu has financed over 500,000 motorbikes, tuk-tuks, and electric bikes across Kenya. In the connectivity market, Watu has provided financing for over 1.2 million smartphones in Kenya since 2022, driving digital access across Africa. To further its green mobility strategy, Watu plans to finance 10,000 electric motorbikes by 2030.
Beyond Financing: Supporting Riders for Long-Term Success
Watu’s initiative aligns with its broader strategy of empowering boda boda riders. By ensuring asset security, full ownership, and access to essential maintenance services, Watu continues to drive financial inclusion and mobility solutions across Africa.
