Mombasa County senator Mohamed Faki in the senate on Tuesday said that the move by the government to have all cargo destined for upcountry destinations be transported via SGR and processed in Naivasha only has affected business in Mombasa a statement that was backed by Kwale County senator Boy Juma.

The transport ministry had issued a directive that beginning first June that all cargo from the port of Mombasa destined to neighboring countries shall only be transported via SGR as part of new coronavirus pandemic measures.

Mombasa County senator Mohamed Faki speaking during a senate proceeding on Tuesday said, “The coronavirus pandemic has affected all sectors of the economy and many stakeholders need safeness to mitigate their losses. It is therefore unfortunate for the Cs, Ministry of Transport to take advantage of coronavirus pandemic to issue illegal directives and strangle the already battled economy on the cost of counties and other neighboring counties on the northern corridors”
