Training programme empowers artists with financial literacy, branding expertise and digital banking solutions

The creative economy has become one of Kenya’s fastest-growing sectors, but many artists still struggle to translate talent into long-term financial security.

Recognizing this gap, NCBA hosted a specialized capacity-building workshop under its Elev8 programme, bringing together creatives for an intensive series of sessions focused on financial literacy, personal branding, media engagement and digital banking.

The multi-session workshop forms part of NCBA’s broader commitment to strengthening Kenya’s creative economy by equipping artists with the practical skills needed to build sustainable careers beyond their creative craft.

Building financially independent creatives

Opening the workshop, NCBA’s Group Director of Marketing, Communications and Citizenship challenged creatives to view professional and financial discipline as essential pillars of long-term success.

Grounded in the bank’s philosophy of Ubuntu, “I am because we are” and its purpose of “Banking on Belief,” the keynote highlighted the importance of investing in both artistic excellence and financial wellbeing.

The message reinforced NCBA’s belief that empowering creatives goes beyond funding projects; it requires building resilient entrepreneurs capable of managing successful careers.

Helping artists turn income into wealth

One of the workshop’s core sessions, led by NCBA Investment Bank, focused on helping artists navigate the often unpredictable nature of creative earnings.

Participants were introduced to investment solutions designed to support different financial goals and risk appetites, including Money Market Funds for liquidity and capital preservation, as well as Equity Funds for long-term wealth creation.

The session encouraged artists to move beyond relying solely on performance and streaming income by embracing structured investing and building passive income streams that can support them throughout their careers.

For many creatives whose incomes fluctuate throughout the year, the training highlighted how disciplined saving and investing can provide greater financial stability while creating opportunities for future growth.

Strengthening personal brands and media confidence

Beyond financial management, the workshop emphasized the importance of visibility and reputation in today’s competitive creative landscape.

Participants also explored professional presentation, including personal branding, dress code, body language and non-verbal communication elements that increasingly influence how artists are perceived by audiences, partners and the media.

Expanding opportunities beyond music

Experts from Dentsu challenged creatives to think beyond traditional entertainment revenue by building stronger personal brands capable of attracting commercial partnerships.

The session explored content creation strategies, authentic storytelling and documenting the creative journey as valuable marketing assets. Participants also learned how to develop professional media kits that can improve their chances of securing endorsements, sponsorships and other business opportunities.

The discussions reflected a growing shift within the creative economy, where artists increasingly operate as entrepreneurs managing multifaceted brands rather than relying on a single source of income.

The programme concluded with practical demonstrations from Loop DFS, showcasing digital financial tools tailored to freelancers, gig workers and creative entrepreneurs.

Artists learned how to use the Loop App to set goal-based savings targets, access responsible borrowing options and make investments directly from their mobile devices.

The session highlighted how digital banking can simplify financial management while supporting creatives as they grow their businesses and pursue long-term financial goals.

Investing in Kenya’s creative economy

As Kenya’s creative sector continues to generate employment, innovation and cultural influence, initiatives such as NCBA Elev8 demonstrate the increasing role financial institutions can play in supporting its growth.

By combining financial education, investment knowledge, media training and digital banking solutions under one programme, NCBA is helping creatives build stronger businesses, improve financial resilience and unlock new economic opportunities.

The workshop reflects a broader vision of empowering artists not only to succeed creatively, but also to thrive as entrepreneurs contributing to Kenya’s evolving creative economy.
