Azerbaijan Seeks International Collaboration In War Against Landmines

Azerbaijan is one of those most contaminated by landmines and explosives remnants of war countries.

In the last 36 months 361 citizens of Azerbaijan became victims of various landmines and explosive remnants. They call them seeds of deaths because they are patiently waiting for the victims since they can wait for decades before they strike.

Azerbaijan ambassador to Kenya Sultan Hajiyev says “This is a tragic toll and apart from life lost and people whose future was ruined, we are also talking about major impact in terms of economic development, financial loses and also impact on environment”

While seeking partnerships to effectively combat the menace of landmines and unexploded ordinances, the ambassador notes that impact on environment is one aspect that Azerbaijan being the COP29 host is currently zooming in on during the international conference on the mining which is currently taking place in the said country.

“It’s the third conference because having invested more than 350 million usd in demining activities since the last three plus years Azerbaijan is open and eager to share the experience, we have gained in humanitarian demining” Implored Hajiyev

As a country facing similar challenges at the same time, it is open and interested to learn from others who have faced and successfully managed similar difficulties.

Azerbaijan has declared landmines free world as one of its sustainable development goals.

“This is our the national development goal as we see direct impact between mining and development, we do hope that as a result of the efforts that we are introducing and after joining our efforts with those of other people who are equally dedicated and committed to landmine free world, we will achieve fragment of landmine from liberated territories of Azerbaijan will become history” says the ambassador

While lauding Kenya on how it is handling climate change agenda, Amb. Hajiyev says “Kenyans have suffered the recent torrential rains and I believe Kenya has a lot to offer because of the role the it is playing on the climate agenda in Africa. We all l know about the successful African climate summit last year. H.E Dr. William Ruto is chairing special climate change committee of the African Union and also Kenya’s climate change negotiatory is chairing Africa climate change negotiatory group. We believe this is a special partnership that Kenya and Azerbaijan will be exploring”

Azerbaijan looks forward to joining forces with Kenya so that together they can increase their impact and achieve meaningful progress both in the run-up to COP29 and beyond
