Absa Boosts Coastal Reforestation Effort

Absa Kenya Foundation has launched the second phase of its coastal restoration programme by planting 200,000 additional mangrove trees at the Sabaki Estuary in Malindi. This expands on the initial phase in 2023, which saw 150,000 trees planted in Mombasa and Kwale counties.

The restoration project is part of the Foundation’s larger goal to plant and nurture 10 million trees by 2032 under its Natural Resource Management pillar. It also supports Kenya’s national mission to plant 15 billion trees by the same year. Phase one revealed a promising 80% survival rate for mangroves when properly planted and maintained.

Driving Environmental Impact Through Partnerships and Community Engagement

During the launch, Absa Bank Kenya’s Chief Finance Officer, Yusuf Omari, emphasized the bank’s long-term commitment to environmental conservation. He noted the critical role mangroves play in biodiversity, climate resilience, and shoreline protection.

Mangroves, often called the “lungs of the coastline,” absorb up to 900 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually and help shield coastal communities from storms and tsunamis. Their dense root systems also reduce erosion and improve water quality.

Absa is working closely with local communities, including groups like the Gazi Women Group in Kwale, to create green jobs and promote sustainable livelihoods such as eco-tourism and aquaculture. Mr. Omari stressed that mangrove restoration is not optional—it is vital for both the environment and future generations.

The Foundation has also partnered with Kenya Forest Service (KFS), Community Forest Associations, and local stakeholders to restore key ecosystems like the Aberdare Forest, Mau Complex, and Sorget Forest in Kericho County.
