Kenyan Clean Energy Firm Lean Energy Earns Global B Corp Certification
Kenyan industrial energy company Lean Energy Solutions has earned B Corp Certification, marking a major milestone in its mission to help East African manufacturers transition from imported fossil fuels to locally sourced renewable biomass.
The globally recognised certification independently validates the company’s business model, which combines commercial success with measurable social and environmental impact.
The achievement comes as manufacturers face rising energy costs, growing pressure to reduce carbon emissions and increased exposure to foreign exchange volatility.
Supporting Manufacturers with Cleaner Energy
Lean Energy helps manufacturers adopt renewable thermal energy without requiring large upfront investments.
Through its Build-Own-Operate model, the company finances, installs, operates and maintains renewable biomass boiler systems for industrial clients. Instead of purchasing the equipment, manufacturers simply pay for the steam they use.
This approach allows businesses to access reliable, lower-carbon energy while avoiding the costs and responsibilities of managing the infrastructure.

Turning Agricultural Waste into Industrial Fuel
Beyond energy production, Lean Energy manages the entire biomass supply chain.
The company converts locally available agricultural residues, including maize cobs and coffee husks, into industrial fuel. As a result, materials that might otherwise go to waste become valuable energy resources for manufacturers.
This model also strengthens local supply chains while reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Delivering Measurable Impact
According to company data, Lean Energy has reduced carbon emissions by 350,000 tonnes since its inception.
Additionally, the company has generated four million person-days of employment and delivered approximately US$50 million in foreign exchange savings for Kenya.
Today, Lean Energy operates more than 20 biomass boiler sites across Kenya and Tanzania. Together, these facilities have a combined steam-generation capacity of 90 tonnes per hour.
Global Recognition for Responsible Business
Lean Energy achieved 87.5 points on B Lab’s B Impact Assessment, exceeding the minimum score of 80 required for B Corp Certification.
Founder and Managing Director Dinesh Tembhekar said the certification reinforces the company’s long-term vision for African manufacturing.
“Africa’s industrial growth should not come at the expense of competitiveness or the environment. This certification strengthens our ambition to scale a model that gives manufacturers reliable, lower-carbon energy while building local value chains and reducing dependence on imported fuels.”
Elizabeth Mutwiri, Communications and Engagement Senior Associate at B Lab Africa, said the assessment evaluates how businesses create value beyond their products.
“The assessment looks beyond a company’s products to how it is governed, how it supports its workers, creates value for communities and customers, and manages its environmental impact. Lean Energy’s certification demonstrates that responsible business practices can be embedded in how an industrial company operates, competes and grows.”
