Preparation for January reopening

Speaking in Kisumu on Sunday, August 9, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) George Magoha said the Ksh7 billion had been set aside and will be awarded to institutions that will meet merit.

The loans will be given to private schools that qualify to help them remain afloat until a time when in-person learning can be resumed in the country. Education CS George Magoha, however, urged parents with learners in private schools and are benefiting from online lessons to pay part of fees to help the schools run.

Magoha maintained reopening of schools has not been cast on stone and will be reviewed depending on the trend showed by the spread of COVID-19.

The government has said it will be offering concessional loans to private school owners in the country to enable the learning institutions to stay afloat ahead of reopening expected in January 2021

The credit facilities will be offered at an interest rate of between 2.5% and 3.5% and will target about 3,000 institutions. “The government is considering availing Ksh7 billion in terms of concessionary loans for those private school owners who will qualify,” said Magoha.

The CS added “Parents can also pay part of the school fees to the schools which are providing online lessons to the learners,”

He said the January 2021 reopening date was not cast on stone and would either be reviewed forward or backward depending on the trend shown by COVID-19. “It is safer for our children to be at home, why do you want them to go and get killed in the schools. Kenya has no apologies for locking up schools to safeguard the children of Kenya because every child has a right to live,”
