NCBA Hosts SME Engagement Forum in Migori

NCBA https://ke.ncbagroup.com/ recently hosted an exclusive engagement dinner for over 100 small and medium enterprise (SME) customers in Migori. The event underscored the bank’s ongoing commitment to supporting SMEs through customised financial solutions and strategic partnerships.

Key stakeholders from Migori County attended the forum. These included Dr. Betty Mogesi Samburu, CECM for Trade and Tourism, and Byron Noel Otieno, Project Field Officer at the KNCCI Migori Chapter. Both highlighted opportunities to boost SMEs in the region. They also stressed the need for strong public-private partnerships, improved funding access, and support for entrepreneurship.

Mr. Dennis Njau, NCBA AG. Director of Retail Banking, reaffirmed the bank’s efforts.
“We are proud of the work we have done to support SMEs, and we are happy to have empowered the business community in Migori County,” he said. “Through partnerships with institutions like Strathmore University for our Owners Management and Enterprise Development Programs, we equip SME owners with critical skills. Collaborating with the African Guarantee Fund and Proparco has also helped us offer seamless financing, enabling customers to grow their businesses.”

Tapping Migori’s Economic Potential

Migori County contributed an average of 1.2% to Kenya’s Gross Value Added (GVA) in the 2023/2024 financial year. This amounted to KSh 90.9 billion, with a per capita GVA of KSh 81,464. From 2013 to 2022, the county recorded an average GVA growth rate of 4.54%, exceeding the national average of 4.37%.

The services sector leads in contribution, averaging 49.7% of the county’s GVA. Agriculture follows at 36.3%, while industry accounts for 14.2%. Despite this economic progress, Migori still faces major challenges. These include a 48% poverty rate, a 2.6% population growth rate, poor infrastructure, and low labour productivity.

H.E. Dr. Joseph Mahiri, Deputy Governor of Migori County, appreciated the event’s significance.
“We are pleased to have participated in this important forum hosted by NCBA. We recognise the challenges facing our business community and welcome partnerships with financial institutions to close funding gaps and spur economic growth,” he said.

The forum provided a valuable platform for aligning stakeholders with the county’s development agenda. Through collaboration between the public and private sectors, such engagements promote inclusive growth, improved access to finance, and long-term sustainability for SMEs in Migori.
