“I Am Not Sure Who Infected Me With HIV”

A lady by the name Susan Metta says many Kenyans are yet to come to terms that she is HIV positive. She says many people in relationships get intimate without even knowing their status.

“Stop determining someone’s HIV status by simply looking at them. Smooth skin and a well-built body do not mean one does not have the virus,” She said in a BBC’s interview.

Metta says from 2008 to 2018, she had a well-paying job in South Sudan where she managed restaurants.

In the year 2018, twins and turns began. “I would suddenly feel hot or cold. I thought it was my body responding to the weather,”. She says she attributed this to the blistering heat

Adding an insult to an injury, Metta’s employment contract was terminated without prior notice in September 2018. She fell into depression and started consuming alcohol heavily.

“Soon after arriving back in Kenya, I developed a cough which did not ebb despite taking medication. I started rapidly losing weight, and my hair changed colour,” she narrated.

Sores on the upper lip prompted her to go to the hospital. On January 14, 2019, she decided to undertake a test, but her courage failed, and she returned home. She took the test two days later after her two sisters convinced her.

It is after the results were relieved that Matte got relieved: she tested positive for HIV. “I finally took the test on January 16, 2019, after ailing for almost six months. When the results came, I smiled and told the medical practitioner to give me ARVs. I was happy because I feared I had cancer,” she said. Susan suspects she contracted HIV in 2016 even though she is unsure who infected her as she had multiple partners.
