Tanzania Mourns

Former Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa, who served from 1995 to 2005 as the third president, has died at the age of 81 years while receiving treatment at a hospital in the country’s commercial hub, Dar es Salaam.

It is not clear what the former president died from.

The announcement was made by President John Pombe Magufuli who also declared seven days of mourning. All flags will be flown at half-mast during the period.

While relaying the news on Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC), President Magufuli in a brief television statement said “I call on all Tanzanians to receive the news of his death and to pray for Mzee Mkapa. More information will be released but Mzee Mkapa is no more,”

Mkapa led Tanzania from 1995 to 2005 before handing over to Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.
