Did You See What Uhuru Will Take Home After Retirement?

President Uhuru Kenyatta will pocket a lifetime salary of Ksh1.2 million per month when he retires from office after the August 9 General Election.

The salary is part of the retirement benefits former presidents are entitled to and is always included in the national budget.

Exiting Heads of State are paid 80 percent of their pensionable income – which is usually 60 percent of their gross salaries.

In addition, Uhuru will receive a one-time gratuity of Ksh34.6 million which is paid to him at the end of his tenure as the President.

He will also get monthly stipends totaling about Ksh1 million including a Ksh300,000 house and Ksh216,562 fuel allowance.

President Uhuru is also afforded Ksh300,000 in water, electricity, and telephone stipend and Ksh200,000 entertainment allotment.

In addition, the outgoing Commander-in-Chief will receive four cars, each coming with a driver – whose salary will be paid by the government.

The retirement package also includes staff –  six security guards, two cooks, four housekeepers, four messengers, four secretaries, two laundry personnel, and staff for a fully-furnished office.

While presenting the 2022/23 budget, Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Ukur Yatani, omitted allocations for Uhuru’s retirement for the 2022/2023 Financial Year.

Omission from the budget raised speculation that Uhuru would remain active in politics even after his retirement. The Head of State is currently the chairman of the Azimio la Umoja Council, a position he will maintain if the coalition wins the August 9 polls.

In May 2021, the Treasury allocated Ksh72,000,000 as gratuity for retired presidents as stipulated in the recurrent expenditure estimates for the Financial Year 2021/22 tabled before Parliament.

The Treasury has created a new budget item named the “gratuity for retired presidents” come July 2022, which coincides with the end of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure.

According to the budget estimates, the figure will increase to Ksh79,200,000 in the Financial Year 2024/25.
