TECNO CAMON 50 Puts Kenyan Stories in Focus Through Global Portrait Project
The 100 Portraits of Becoming project combines inclusive imaging with stories of resilience, identity and ambition.
TECNO has completed the Kenyan chapter of 100 Portraits of Becoming, a global portrait project created with Brazilian artist and photographer Angélica Dass. The collection features 20 Kenyans photographed using the TECNO CAMON 50 Ultra.
At the centre is Universal Tone 3.0, TECNO’s imaging technology designed to capture diverse skin tones more naturally across different lighting conditions. However, the project goes beyond smartphone photography to explore the people and experiences behind each portrait.
Beyond the Camera Lens
The project forms part of TECNO’s CAMON 50 Sees You campaign, built around the message that becoming takes more than what the eye can see.
Through portraits and personal interviews, the initiative highlights the choices, challenges and everyday efforts that shape people’s journeys. It also explores how technology can represent different complexions without making everyone look the same.
Kenyan Stories of Resilience
Among those featured is Mutua Alex Muli, co-founder of Goshen Farm. After witnessing farmers lose produce, he helped connect small-scale farmers to markets through export channels and digital platforms.
“When everyone said leave, I stayed. I wanted to prove that there was something worth building here,” said Alex.
The collection also features Jelimo Cheboi, co-founder of GirlSkate Nairobi, who helped create a supportive space for female skateboarders.
“There was no place for us, so we created one,” she said, reflecting on the need for girls and women to find belonging in skateboarding.
Other participants include Anita Mbithe, founder of Brushes By Mbithee, Beauty and Hair, and Brian Muchiri, founder of Boy in The Wheelchair. Their stories bring further perspectives on entrepreneurship, disability and representation.
Together, the portraits show that personal growth rarely comes from one defining moment. It develops through persistence, difficult choices and the determination to keep moving forward.
From Kenya to the World
Angélica Dass brings her portraiture expertise to the project, which combines artistic storytelling with TECNO’s imaging technology. Kenya marks the first chapter of a two-year initiative that will feature 100 people across five countries: Kenya, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Brazil.
The project invites audiences to look beyond appearances and understand the experiences that shape each person.
