An old man in Kiharu, Murang’a County has left his family and area residents puzzled after going against the grain and opting to dig his own grave and draft his own eulogy.

In what is considered taboo in the African culture, Samuel Karanja who is now the village’s most sought-after individual says he opted to plan his funeral in advance, to save his family the “trouble.”
In his final resting place, Karanja has inscribed with the word “Kumenya” which if translated to English would mean knowing.
As if that’s not enough, Karanja has also gone ahead to list clear instructions on how he wishes his remains to be interred.
No flowers, no cross, and most importantly, he does not want his remains covered in soil.
It’s a move that has left many in shock. Family members, however, say the man has led a quiet life and chose to exclude himself from the rest of the society during his activities.
Karanja also wrote his own eulogy, his excuse being no one knows him better than himself.
For now, his graveyard remains untouched and the perplexed villagers wondering what would drive him to take such action.
