Kenyan Hip-Hop’s Unstoppable Rise, Ten Years After Octopizzo’s LDPC
Over the past three years, Kenyan hip-hop has exploded on Spotify. Streams have more than doubled, the fan base has grown younger and more diverse, and the sound now stretches far beyond Nairobi.
This surge comes at a fitting moment: on 8 August 2025, Octopizzo’s Long Distance Paper Chaser (LDPC) turns ten.
Released in 2015 as his second studio album, LDPC remains a landmark project—one of the early sparks that pushed Kenyan hip-hop into the streaming era. Today, the genre doesn’t just survive. It dominates.
Fuelled by Gen Z and Reaching New Fans
From 2022 to 2024, Kenyan hip-hop streams on Spotify jumped from 170 million to over 430 million, a 152% leap, averaging nearly 60% growth per year.
This is no small uptick; it’s a movement powered by Kenya’s youth. In fact, 61% of all hip-hop plays come from 18- to 24-year-olds, making it Gen Z’s defining soundtrack.
The audience is also diversifying. While early listeners were mostly men, women now account for 27% of all Kenyan hip-hop streams, almost 28 million in total. This shift shows that the genre’s pull now cuts across gender and background.
Kenyan hip-hop’s reach is no longer limited to Nairobi. The capital still leads with nearly 94 million streams in 2024, but strong fan bases are emerging across Mombasa, Nakuru, Thika, Meru, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nyeri, Murang’a, and Nanyuki. What began as an urban movement has grown into a nationwide phenomenon.

Leaders of the New Era
At the forefront is rap trio Wakadinali. Known for their raw Sheng drill style and independent approach, they have racked up around 46 million lifetime Spotify streams.
Their dominance is both impressive and symbolic, representing hip-hop’s transformation from niche subculture to national powerhouse.
In 2024, they topped Kenya’s most-streamed hip-hop list with tracks like Hizi Stance, Sikutambui, and Kichwa Mbaya (ft. Masterpiece King) driving momentum on the 254Flow playlist.
Other heavyweights remain key to the story. Nyashinski, second on the list with 28 million streams, balances lyrical depth with mainstream hits like Shots (with Cedo) and Under the Influence (with Femi One).
Octopizzo, still influential a decade after LDPC, ranks third with 23 million streams. Khaligraph Jones, Buruklyn Boyz, and Boutross keep the gritty street edge alive.
Meanwhile, rising talents are shaking up the scene. Toxic Lyrikali, fresh out of his teens and from Eastlands’ Kayole estate, is building a fast-growing fanbase.
His breakout track Chinje earned a spot among 254Flow’s top songs, despite no major features or media backing. These next-gen artists aren’t waiting for industry approval; they’re winning fans directly.
