A gun-toting prison warder who had gone on the loose, threatening to kill his girlfriend over some Ksh.900,00 was on Wednesday arrested in Thika, while lying in wait for his would-be victim who was out of the house.

According to a statement issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), prison warder Edwin Omuse arrived in Thika around 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

He then proceeded to Kisii Estate in Thika and gained entry into his girlfriend’s house using a spare key.

At the time, detectives who were well aware of the plan had moved the woman- said to be a fourth-year student at the Mount Kenya University- to safety.

“In a bid to save the girlfriend’s life, detectives from the Special Service Unit supported by their Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau counterparts immediately led to trace her in her house located at Kisii estate in Thika town,” the police report says.

According to detectives, the prison warder proceeded to assemble the G3 rifle he had carried from Meru in a sack.

“He then made a call to the girlfriend who is a fourth-year student at Mt. Kenya University, inquiring on her whereabouts,” the police report says.

The girlfriend is said to be enrolled in an environmental health course at the university’s main campus in Thika.

Detectives then raided the house, arresting the warder and recovering the firearm, which was loaded with 20 rounds of 7.62 mm ammo.

The gun was hidden beneath a couch.

His arrest came after a report was made that he had been spotted at the Kangeta shopping centre with a gun hidden in a sack.

Police were also informed that he was overheard saying he was going to Thika to kill his girlfriend, whom he claimed defrauded him of Ksh.900,000.

He had reportedly received the money as a loan.
