Programme to boost skills, grants, and digital tools for women entrepreneurs

The M-Pesa Foundation has launched Wezesha Mama, a nationwide programme aimed at empowering registered women’s groups. It provides vital skills, resources, and opportunities to help them grow their businesses and improve livelihoods. This initiative responds to the urgent need to support women entrepreneurs who often face limited access to training and finance.

The launch took place at Mombasa Sports Club during the M-PESA Sokoni Festival, which is part of the ongoing M-PESA at 18 celebrations. The Foundation also marks 15 years of transforming lives across Kenya through various social and economic projects.

Nicholas Nganga, Chairman of M-Pesa Foundation, said, “Wezesha Mama is more than a programme—it is a movement. We want to equip women-led groups with the tools they need to succeed. When women rise, entire communities rise. We begin at the coast and aim to reach all 47 counties within the next year.”

Training, grants, and a supportive network

Wezesha Mama aims to empower over 500 women’s groups countrywide. The programme will deliver financial and digital literacy training, business development coaching, marketing and branding support, and product improvement guidance. Importantly, it will also offer grants to the highest-performing groups to scale their businesses.

At the end of the 12-month programme, the top three groups from five regions will receive grants of KES 500,000, KES 300,000, and KES 200,000 respectively. These funds will enable groups to expand their activities and increase income for their members.

Additionally, participating groups will join the M-PESA Mama Network, a community of women entrepreneurs focused on peer learning and shared growth, fostering long-term collaboration and success.

Building on past successes

This initiative builds on the Foundation’s previous work with partners such as Hand in Hand East Africa and Rose Women Foundation, which have helped thousands of women access business training and financial services.

M-PESA Sokoni is a two-month campaign celebrating M-PESA’s 18 years of reshaping Kenya’s digital and financial landscape. The coastal tour culminates on June 7 at Mombasa Sports Club Grounds with the M-PESA Sokoni Festival, a vibrant event celebrating innovation, entrepreneurship, and community spirit.
