Boosting Maternal and Child Health

The M-Pesa Foundation has invested KES 50 million to construct a new maternity wing at Chegilet Health Centre in Keiyo North, Elgeyo Marakwet. The facility will serve a catchment population of about 18,430 people.

The wing will include a 12-bed postnatal ward, a 12-bed antenatal ward, a 6-bed Kangaroo room, an Obstetrics Theatre, an Induction room, a 6-bed labour ward, a 2-bed delivery room, and a Newborn Unit.

“Health is a key pillar for M-Pesa Foundation because good health is the cornerstone of any thriving community,” said Nicholas Ng’ang’a, M-Pesa Foundation Chairman. He emphasized that the Foundation works with partners to expand access to maternal and child health while tackling non-communicable diseases.

Easing Pressure on Local Facilities

Gilbert Biwott, the nurse-in-charge of the maternity wing at Chegilet Health Centre, welcomed the development. He noted that the new facility will ease congestion and reduce maternal and neonatal complications.

“This maternity wing will transform how we deliver health services. For years, mothers have had to travel long distances or rely on overstretched facilities for safe deliveries. This is a milestone for Elgeyo Marakwet,” he said.

Free Medical Camp in Marakwet West

In Marakwet West, over 3,000 residents benefited from a free medical camp held at Kapkoros Primary School. The camp was organised by M-Pesa Foundation in partnership with Zuri Health, Lion First Sight Eye Hospital, and the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE).

Services included eye care consultations, cancer screenings, fistula screenings, diabetes and hypertension checks, general doctor consultations, and child health services.

Supporting Mothers and Families

The Foundation also distributed Mama Packs, containing essentials for mothers and babies, to new mothers at Iten County Referral Hospital.

One beneficiary, Thomas Kamengich, appreciated the medical support. “I have been experiencing eye problems for a long time but could not afford a specialist. At this camp, I received treatment at no cost. This kind of support makes us feel seen and cared for,” she said.

Another new mother, Valentine Cherop, expressed gratitude for the Mama Pack. “As a mother of twins, I was anxious about not having enough for my babies. The Mama Pack has given me confidence and relief,” she shared.

Long-Term Healthcare Impact

Through such investments and outreach programmes, M-Pesa Foundation is bridging healthcare gaps in underserved areas. To date, its health initiatives have reached over 2 million people in 47 counties.

The Elgeyo Marakwet investment adds to this legacy, ensuring communities have access to quality, dignified, and sustainable healthcare services.
