COMESA warns against consumption of Kinder Joy amid health concerns

The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) has warned consumers not to consume Kinder Joy chocolates, just weeks after the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) placed the product on recall due to safety concerns.

The commission issued the warning after determining that the affected products pose a significant health risk to COMESA member states.

“The commission has also established that some Kinder chocolate products are imported and marketed in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa,” said the commission on Tuesday.

“In consideration of the risk, some of the Comesa member States such as Kenya, Egypt and Sudan have launched a probe into Kinder products in their respective markets.”

The commission advised the public to be cautious with the product and that they may be reimbursed if they returned it to their purchase points.

“In view of the foregoing, the commission would like to inform the general public to exercise caution and avoid the purchase or consumption of the above recalled products and return them to the point of purchase for a full refund,” it said.

Kinder Joy is a confectionery product of Ferrero, the world’s second-largest chocolate and confectionery company.

While further investigations are ongoing, a precautionary recall has been issued in Germany and the United Kingdom (UK).
