Nairobi, Kenya – KCB Bank Kenya has secured a US$100 million (KSh12.9 billion) financing facility from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to expand credit for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The facility reinforces KCB’s commitment to supporting entrepreneurship, creating jobs and driving sustainable economic growth across Kenya.

Under the agreement, 35 per cent of the funding will support women and youth-led enterprises. Additionally, 30 per cent will finance eligible green investments. These funds will help businesses adopt climate-smart technologies and sustainable business practices.

Boosting Access to Affordable Credit

The new facility will increase access to affordable financing for MSMEs across Kenya. It also targets businesses that have traditionally faced challenges in accessing credit.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, EBRD Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, Dr. Heike Harmgart, described the partnership as a milestone for the institution’s work in Kenya.

“This investment marks our first investment in Kenya’s financial sector. By partnering with KCB Bank, we are helping to channel much-needed financing to MSMEs, the engines of job creation and economic growth. We are particularly pleased that this facility will contribute to the transition to a greener economy and will expand opportunities for women and young entrepreneurs, whose success is critical to Kenya’s long-term prosperity.”

Strengthening Green Finance

In addition to the financing, EBRD will provide technical support to KCB Bank. The programme includes specialised training, advisory services and technical expertise.

These initiatives will strengthen KCB’s green lending capabilities. They will also enhance the bank’s ability to finance environmentally sustainable projects.

KCB Bank Kenya Managing Director Annastacia Kimtai said the funding will help the bank expand support for small businesses.

“This facility will strengthen our capacity to extend affordable financing to SMEs, particularly those that have traditionally faced barriers in accessing credit. We remain committed to sustainable finance by increasing investments in renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture and other green projects that contribute to Kenya’s climate ambitions while creating long-term economic value.”

Building on a Strong Track Record

The latest financing builds on KCB’s continued support for Kenya’s MSME sector.

Through its Female-Led & Made Enterprises (FLME) proposition, the bank has disbursed more than KSh156 billion to women entrepreneurs. The programme continues to improve access to finance for women-owned businesses.

Moreover, KCB has provided over KSh48.8 billion in green financing. These investments support renewable energy and other environmentally sustainable projects.

By the end of March 2026, the bank had also extended KSh13 billion in new credit to micro, small and medium enterprises. This lending demonstrates KCB’s continued commitment to supporting business growth.

Driving Sustainable Economic Growth

The new EBRD facility strengthens KCB’s ability to finance businesses that create jobs, drive innovation and contribute to Kenya’s green transition.

Together, the financing and technical support will help more enterprises grow. At the same time, they will promote financial inclusion and sustainable economic development across the country.
