Google has launched a new initiative to equip university students across Africa with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools.

Through the program, eligible students in Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe will receive free access to the premium Google AI Pro plan for 12 months.

The initiative aims to enhance learning, research, and creativity while helping students build essential AI skills for the modern workforce.

Empowering Africa’s Next Generation of Innovators

Using Google’s most capable AI model, Gemini 2.5 Pro, students will gain hands-on experience with generative AI technologies.

The program is designed to help learners deepen their academic understanding, improve problem-solving, and develop practical digital skills.

“We are seeing a new wave of innovation in Africa, driven by the energy and ingenuity of our young people,” said Alex Okosi, Managing Director for Google in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“By providing students with access to our most advanced AI tools, we want to empower them to not only excel in their studies but also to become critical builders and shapers of the future. This offer is about democratizing access to technology and giving African students the skills to compete and lead globally.”

What Google AI Pro Offers

The Google AI Pro plan provides a suite of tools tailored for students’ academic and creative needs.

  • Supercharged Learning and Research: Guided Learning helps with research, academic summaries, debugging code, and solving complex problems.

  • Time-Saving Efficiency: Deep Research generates comprehensive, cited reports from hundreds of sources within minutes.

  • Enhanced Creativity and Organization: Tools like NotebookLM organize notes and ideas, while Veo 3 turns text or images into high-quality short videos.

  • Ample Storage: Each student receives 2 TB of cloud storage across Google Drive, Gmail, and Photos for coursework and creative projects.

How Students Can Access the Offer

Eligible university students can activate their free 12-month plan by visiting gemini.google/students between October 7 and December 9, 2025. Verification is required, though no charges apply.

Once approved, students gain full access to AI-powered tools for research, learning, and collaboration.

Building on Google’s Commitment to Africa

This offer builds on Google’s ongoing investment in Africa’s digital growth. Initiatives such as the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and the Digital Skills for Africa program have already helped millions of learners and entrepreneurs across the continent.

By extending access to AI education, Google continues to bridge the digital skills gap and prepare Africa’s youth for a technology-driven future.
