Enhancing Urban Water and Sanitation Services

Water and Sanitation for Urban Populations (WSUP) is marking its 20th anniversary with an ambitious 2025-2030 Strategic Plan. The goal is to help cities in Africa and Asia build climate-resilient, inclusive water and sanitation services. These services will primarily benefit urban residents, especially those in low-income communities.

As climate change, rapid urbanization, and shrinking development finance continue to increase pressure on urban services, WSUP’s strategy lays out a clear roadmap to strengthen water and sanitation systems.

More importantly, it aims to expand affordable services and embed climate resilience across entire cities. By taking a proactive approach, WSUP ensures that essential services remain accessible and sustainable in the long term.

Key Initiatives for Lasting Impact

WSUP’s strategy focuses on strengthening urban systems to ensure reliable services for all, particularly the most vulnerable. To achieve this, the plan includes several flagship initiatives:

  • Roll Out Regulation in Africa (RORA): Supporting regulators in eight African countries to enforce pro-poor water and sanitation policies. As a result, low-income communities will benefit from better service delivery.
  • Shared Sanitation for Improved Child Health: Expanding high-quality shared sanitation solutions. Notably, WSUP’s research in Mozambique links improved sanitation to better child health outcomes, reinforcing the need for this initiative.
  • Climate-Resilient WASH Services: Helping urban water and sanitation systems adapt to climate change. In addition, the initiative promotes smart infrastructure, water efficiency, and methane reduction to support climate mitigation.

Strengthening Partnerships for Sustainable Change

Additionally, WSUP recognizes that achieving lasting impact requires collaboration. Therefore, the organization urges governments, utilities, and funders to join forces in building inclusive, resilient water and sanitation systems.

By working together, stakeholders can implement meaningful change that benefits millions of urban residents.

“Cities are on the frontlines of climate change, and the most vulnerable residents are already feeling the impact. Consequently, our strategy is a call to action for key stakeholders to work with us in securing sustainable solutions,” said WSUP CEO Ed Mitchell.

WSUP has officially changed its name to Water and Sanitation for Urban Populations. This shift reflects its role as a leader in urban WASH solutions. Furthermore, the organization envisions a world where all city residents, including those in informal settlements, have access to sustainable water and sanitation services.

Finally, eligible cities and partners can collaborate with WSUP to implement these transformative initiatives. By prioritizing resilience, inclusivity, and innovation, WSUP is shaping the future of urban water and sanitation services.
