Welcome Relief For Gatimbi Health Centre As Safaricom Foundation Lenders Helping Hand
Tucked deep inside the sleepy Abuthuguchi Ward in Meru County, is a medical facility known as Gatimbi Health Centre. A rural facility operating under the County government of Meru serving the community and especially expectant mothers.
Started as a community-based development project in 1963, the facility was upgraded into a dispensary in 1965 and later before transitioning into a health center on 2nd September 2002 and now serving as a referral center for all dispensaries within Abuthuguchi ward.
However, the facility has had its fair share of challenges including the rise in the number of expectant mothers against limited capacity to adequately serve the huge number.
But it was a change of fortunes for the facility after it received a shot in the arm.
Through social media, the hospital administrators learned of the Safaricom Foundation and immediately applied for support through Ndoto Zetu Initiative. Their prayer appears to have touched officials from Ndoto Zetu Initiative officials who offered to lend a helping hand donating modern maternity equipment to the facility.
The act of charity by Ndoto Zetu Initiatiative, according to the head of the facility Charity Karimi, providing welcome relief for the administrators as well as those who depend on it for services.
“The equipment provided by Safaricom Foundation has made work efficient, fast and accurate. The number of expectant mothers seeking services has also increased and we are so grateful that we can easily serve the community” said Charity
Linda Kathambi an expectant mother attending her fourth antenatal clinic says “The services here are the best. Since there are enough machines, one does not need to wait or rather queue for attendance. Thank you, Safaricom Foundation,” she observed.
Betty Nkirote who delivered at the facility says she had the best services and was able to deliver safely.
The stakeholders, however, say they are in need of an automated urine analyzer, full haemogram machine, advanced centrifuge, male and female admission wards, and automated Biochemistry analyzer to further enhance the capacity of the facility thereby improving outcomes.
Thanks to well-wishers like Safaricom Foundation and contributions from Meru County government, Gatimbi Health Centre is set to be elevated from Level 3 to Level 4 hospital with admission wards and fully equipped laboratory within the next five years.
