Safaricom Ethiopia Hits 10 Million Customers

Milestone Reached Amid Major Investment and Job Creation

Safaricom Ethiopia has reached a significant milestone, serving 10 million active customers within 90 days across the country. This achievement comes just four years after the company received its license to operate in Ethiopia.

The milestone signals Safaricom’s growing impact in supporting Ethiopia’s digital transformation. The company is committed to building inclusive and reliable mobile connectivity that empowers people everywhere, all the time.

According to Chief Executive Officer Wim Vanhelleputte, the growth is not just about numbers. “Behind each SIM card, there is an individual, a family, a business, and a future,” he said. “We are proud of our progress and remain dedicated to connecting people, enabling opportunity, and supporting a Digital Ethiopia.”

In just four years, Safaricom has invested over 300 billion ETB (approximately USD 2.27 billion) to develop robust telecom and digital financial services infrastructure.

Its 4G network now covers over half of Ethiopia’s population. The company has deployed 3,141 live sites in more than 150 towns and cities. An average of 31,000 new customers joins Safaricom Ethiopia every day.

Digital Growth Powered by Local Talent and Social Impact

Of the 10 million active users, 7.1 million use mobile data services. Average data consumption has grown to 6.5GB per user monthly, a 53% increase from the previous year.

This growth is driven by people. Safaricom Ethiopia employs 900 direct staff, with 97% being Ethiopian nationals. It has also created over 20,000 indirect jobs through its vast network of brand ambassadors, distributors, and subcontractors.

The company has also invested over 100 million ETB in education, providing laptops, routers, and free internet access to schools across the country. In times of crisis, Safaricom has supported affected communities, including fire-hit businesses in Ashewa, landslide victims in Gofa Zone, and earthquake survivors in Afar. It also donated 10 million ETB to the Mekedonia Humanitarian Association.

This 10 million customer milestone reflects not only growth but trusttrust from the Ethiopian people, the government, and business partners.

With a solid foundation and continued commitment, Safaricom Ethiopia pledges to remain a reliable and inclusive partner in Ethiopia’s digital future.
