KIFWA Rolls Out Digital Marine Cargo Insurance Platform
The Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (KIFWA), together with leading insurance companies and technology partners, has launched the Digital Marine Cargo Insurance (DMCI) Platform ahead of the mandatory Marine Cargo Insurance requirement that takes effect on 1 July 2026.
The new platform introduces a fully digital process for obtaining Marine Cargo Insurance certificates. As a result, importers and clearing agents will experience faster processing, improved compliance and greater efficiency.
The initiative brings together APA General Insurance, Britam General Insurance, CIC General Insurance, Old Mutual General Insurance, Pacis Insurance, Dynamique and eCitizen to deliver a seamless insurance solution for Kenya’s logistics industry.

Faster and Simpler Cargo Processing
The Digital Marine Cargo Insurance Platform enables importers, freight forwarders and clearing agents to obtain insurance certificates instantly through a secure online system.
In addition, the platform connects directly with eCitizen, the Kenya Revenue Authority’s Integrated Customs Management System (ICMS), M-Pesa, participating banks and other regulatory agencies. This integration allows users to pay premiums, verify certificates and complete customs processes in real time.
The platform also issues digital certificates instantly. It verifies payments automatically and authenticates certificates immediately. Consequently, cargo clearance becomes faster and more transparent.
According to KIFWA, the system will reduce paperwork, improve compliance and strengthen service delivery across the logistics value chain.
Training Supports Smooth Transition
Meanwhile, KIFWA and its partners have already conducted sensitization and training sessions in Nairobi, Mombasa, Malaba, Busia, Namanga and Isebania.
The programme equips members with practical skills on accessing the platform, issuing certificates, paying premiums and integrating insurance into customs clearance procedures. Participants also receive guidance on claims reporting and customer support.
Furthermore, KIFWA will continue the training programme over the next 12 months. The association aims to ensure that all members adopt the platform with confidence before full implementation.
KIFWA also reaffirmed its commitment to providing technical support throughout the transition period. It will continue working closely with its insurance partners to address operational challenges as they arise.
Boosting Digital Trade
The rollout marks another milestone in Kenya’s efforts to digitise trade and logistics services.
By replacing manual processes with an integrated digital platform, KIFWA expects to shorten cargo clearance timelines and improve regulatory compliance. At the same time, the platform will enhance customer experience for importers, freight forwarders and clearing agents.
Therefore, the association has urged all members to adopt the Digital Marine Cargo Insurance Platform before the mandatory Marine Cargo Insurance regulations come into force on 1 July 2026.
Ultimately, the initiative demonstrates how collaboration between the logistics, insurance and technology sectors can strengthen trade efficiency while supporting Kenya’s broader digital transformation agenda.
