Google has launched its Gemini Pro Plan (Google AI Pro) in Kenya, marking a major step in advancing AI education across universities and colleges. The launch event took place at the Sarova Stanley Hotel in Nairobi.

Supporting Kenya’s AI Strategy

The event brought together senior government officials, academic leaders, and students. Among them were the Cabinet Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, Hon. William Kabogo, and the Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala.

Speaking at the event, CS Kabogo said the initiative aligns with the Kenya AI Strategy 2025–2030. He emphasized that giving students access to Google’s most advanced AI model will prepare them for the future workforce.

Moreover, he noted that the collaboration reflects Kenya’s commitment to ensuring the benefits of AI are shared equitably across society.

Bridging the Skills Gap

Dr. David Watene, Director of University Education and Research, represented the PS and highlighted the need to bridge the country’s skills gap. He explained that the introduction of Gemini Pro offers an unmatched resource for universities.

In addition, tools like Guided Learning and AI-powered quizzes will allow students to strengthen their understanding and improve critical thinking skills.

The program gives eligible students aged 18 and above twelve months of free access to Gemini Pro. Registration for the offer remains open until December 9, 2025.

Building the Next Generation of AI Talent

According to Benson Kinoti, Google for Education Lead in Sub-Saharan Africa, education remains central to Google’s mission. “We are proud to provide free access to Gemini Pro for Kenyan students,” he said.

“This AI tutor helps learners grasp complex topics and learn at their own pace.”

Through the Gemini Pro Plan, students can access Gemini 2.5 Pro, an AI model designed as a personal tutor and academic companion.

Notably, the tool allows unlimited photo uploads to scan lecture notes, create practice questions, generate reports with citations, and produce videos through Veo 3.1 Fast.

Enhancing Learning with AI Tools

Students will also benefit from NotebookLM, Google’s AI-powered research and writing assistant. The tool helps them summarize and organize content from uploaded sources, including documents, videos, and websites.

Furthermore, they receive 2TB of Google Drive storage, interactive quizzes, and guided learning resources.

This initiative aligns with Goal 4 of the Kenya National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2025–2030, which focuses on building a skilled and agile AI workforce.

Consequently, it highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in driving innovation and talent development.

Free AI Training for Students and Lecturers

To complement the rollout, Google is offering a free course titled “AI for Higher Education” through the Gemini Academy. The 90-minute training covers the ethical and effective use of AI. Upon completion, graduates will receive an official Google Gemini Certificate.

Applications are open until December 9, 2025, via https://gemini.google/students/.
