Do You Know What Is An Open Marriage?

Open marriage is a form of non-monogamy in which the partners of a dyadic marriage agree that each may engage in extramarital sexual relationships, without this being regarded by them as infidelity, and consider or establish an open relationship despite the implied monogamy of marriage.

A marriage or relationship in which both partners agree that each may have sexual relations with others.

Open relationships do not encourage emotional attachment with external partners. Some people in open relationships prefer onetime sexual experiences or several dates, but ensure they do not become romantically involved with these additional sexual partners. A couple in an open relationship always prioritizes their primary relationship.

Someone could be in an open marriage and say, ‘You’re allowed to flirt and make out with people when we go to bars, and that’s it,”. While others might say, “’You’re allowed to have a boyfriend or girlfriend in addition to me, your spouse.”

It’s less about following the “right” rules that define it, and more about which specific rules and boundaries you and your spouse agree on.

The most important elements of open marriage are communication and trust. When one partner is having an affair outside of the marriage, their spouse has no knowledge of or control over what’s going on.

In an open marriage, partners discuss extramarital relations with the understanding that any decisions will be made together. Also, partners in an open marriage must be open to making changes in their extra-marital relationships if needed: the spouse always comes first.
