Fatal Morning Collision

A driver ferrying miraa died on the spot after a head-on collision along the busy Mwea–Embu Highway.

The crash occurred at Samson Corner at around 10:30 a.m. on Friday.

According to witnesses, the driver was behind the wheel of a Probox when it collided with an oncoming Canter lorry, leading to his instant death.

High-Speed Overtaking Blamed

The lorry driver, Nicolas Murithi, said he was travelling from Nairobi to Chuka when the incident occurred.

He explained that three Probox vehicles, all ferrying miraa, approached at high speed while heading towards Nairobi.

While two vehicles managed to overtake safely, the third attempted the same manoeuvre and crashed head-on into his lorry.

As a result, the impact killed the Probox driver instantly. Murithi expressed shock at the speed at which the vehicle was being driven.

Boda Boda Rider and Family Injured

In addition, the Probox struck a boda boda rider who was travelling with his wife and child.

Emergency responders rushed the two adults to hospital. Fortunately, the child escaped the unhurt.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by road users along the highway.

Residents Raise Alarm Over Rising Accidents

Following the crash, residents voiced concern over the increasing number of fatal accidents in the area.

Led by Dan Murango, locals called for urgent action to improve road safety.

Another witness, Dan Mwai from Murinduko, questioned the growing trend.

“Two people, a man and his wife, were killed at Difathas yesterday, and another person was killed at Nyangati. What is going on?” he said.

Outrage Over Removal of Miraa Cargo

Meanwhile, the incident sparked further anger among residents after another miraa vehicle reportedly arrived at the scene.

According to witnesses, the occupants removed the miraa from the wreckage and left the deceased’s body behind.

“This shows they value miraa more than human life,” said Joseph Karanja.

The actions drew widespread condemnation from the local community.

Police Launch Investigations

Officers from Wang’uru Police Station responded to the scene shortly after the crash.

They moved the body to a mortuary pending identification. At the same time, they towed the damaged vehicles to the station.

Authorities have since launched investigations into the incident.
