How to Generate KRA eTIMS Invoices on WhatsApp: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced a WhatsApp-based service that allows taxpayers to generate eTIMS invoices directly from their phones. The move aims to simplify tax compliance, especially for small business owners, traders, and freelancers.

With no need for additional apps or physical visits, the service brings invoicing closer to everyday users through a familiar platform.

Getting Started

To begin, save the official KRA WhatsApp number +254 711 099 999 on your phone. Then open WhatsApp and send a message such as “Hi” or “Menu.”

This activates the KRA virtual assistant, the Shuru Chatbot, which will respond with a list of available services. From the menu, select the eTIMS Invoice option.

Logging In Securely

Before generating an invoice, you will need to log in. Enter your KRA PIN when prompted. The system will then send a one-time password (OTP) to your registered phone number for verification.

This step ensures that only authorised users can access the service.

Entering Invoice Details

Once logged in, the chatbot guides you through the process step by step. You will be required to:

  • Input your KRA PIN
  • Describe the goods or services sold
  • Enter the quantity
  • Provide the selling price

The system keeps the process simple, prompting you at each stage to ensure accuracy.

Generating and Sharing the Invoice

After confirming the details, the system generates the invoice instantly. A downloadable link will appear in the chat.

You can then download the invoice as a PDF or share it directly with your customer. The document will include the official eTIMS branding, confirming it is tax compliant.

Driving Simpler Tax Compliance

According to KRA, the service is designed to make tax compliance as easy as sending a message. By leveraging WhatsApp, the authority is lowering barriers for informal businesses and individuals to meet their tax obligations.

As digital adoption grows, tools like this are expected to play a key role in widening the tax base while improving convenience for taxpayers across the country.
