Students Tap Content Creation for Income at Pwani Masterclass
More than 500 students at Pwani University gathered for a hands-on digital masterclass as Safaricom and Sprite brought their “Hook’d on Fresh” creator series to the coast.
The session focused on turning social media use into real income. Students explored how platforms like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube can move from entertainment to sustainable earning channels.
Digital creators, including Tileh Pacbro, Rono, Juma Shibe and Vallery Odundo, led the sessions. They shared practical insights on identifying trends, growing audiences and securing brand partnerships.
“I’ve always had a smartphone and posted videos, but I didn’t know how to convert them into an income stream,” said Alfred Fondo, a Computer Science student. “Now I’m thinking differently. This can actually help me support myself.”

Turning creativity into income streams
Beyond content creation, the training introduced students to financial discipline. Safaricom’s wealth team guided participants on managing digital income, encouraging saving and early investing to build long-term stability.
The initiative comes as more young Kenyans turn to digital platforms for income, driven by increased internet access and smartphone penetration.
Safaricom says the programme reflects its broader role in enabling opportunity.
“Content creation is already a big part of how young people express themselves. The next step is helping them turn that into something sustainable,” said Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi.
Pwani University becomes the latest stop in the “Hook’d on Fresh” series, following activations at Africa Nazarene University, University of Eldoret and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
By blending digital skills with financial literacy, the programme highlights a growing shift where creativity, connectivity and commerce are opening new income pathways for Kenya’s youth.
