Meru Farmers Receive Sh37.6 Million From Hon. Kiraitu
Governor Kiraitu Murungi has officiated over the issuance of cheques valued at Sh37.6 million to farmers who were adversely affected by locust invasion in Meru County from various wards, namely; Amwathi, Kangeta, Muthara, Thangatha, Athwana, Timau, Nyaki East, Kiagu, and Mitinguu.
The money has been facilitated through Meru County’s partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Cooperatives through Emergency Locust Response Project (ELRP), and will be issued to 235 farmer groups (Community Driven Development Committees -CDDCs).
Meru County has become the first of the 15 counties under the project to issue cheques directly to farmers after tireless efforts led by Governor Kiraitu to reach out to partners in the search for more resources to transform the lives of Meru people.
The soils and climatic conditions of Meru County favor the growing of crops such as wheat, potatoes, millet, sorghum, and maize. Key cash crops include tea, coffee, bananas, and miraa. Groundnuts as well as different varieties of legumes, vegetables, and fruits also do well.
Livestock production is carried out both for subsistence and commercial purposes. Cattle, goats, and sheep are kept while poultry farming and beekeeping are also carried out. Over 3,000 farmers in Meru engage in fish farming.
