COVID-19 patients admitted to public hospitals will be forced to foot their own hospital bills for the health workers’ Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs).

This comes after it emerged that the government will no longer be taking care of the bills as it had initially promised despite receiving huge donations from private and public investors.

Some of the hospitals already charging their patients include Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital.

Earlier, during the daily COVID-19 briefings, acting Health Director-General Patrick Amoth said treating an asymptomatic patient, it costs about Ksh 21,000.

He added that those with mild symptoms are likely to pay KSh 21,400 daily citing the expensive protective gear required by nurses and doctors treating the patients.
