The Clergy Want Parents And Caregivers To Be Responsible For Their Children

A section of clergy has raised concerns over what they say are attempts to introduce sex education within the country’s schools in efforts to minimize the teenage pregnancies. The clergy who are also opposed to the reproductive health bill 2019 currently before the senate argue that parents and caregivers should instead instill and offer life teachings to their children.

This comes after alarming cases of reported teenage pregnancies in the country with about 4,000 girls aged below 19 years having been reported in Machakos County alone by a survey conducted by Kenya Health Information System.

This has brought about some reactions with some stakeholders supporting the need of introducing sex education in the curriculum.

The clergy has however opposed the reproductive health bill 2019 asking parents and caregivers to play more proactive roles to shape the future of the children.

On Sunday at the Holy Family Basilica, one of the priests noted that “We strongly hold that safeguarding of all children is everyone’s responsibility. We retaliate our believe that strong family values and personal responsibility on nurturing and safeguarding children can go a long way towards eradicating or significantly reducing child’s sexual exploitation and the resultant teenage pregnancies that scatter life goals of our children”

It is during this that the clergy too earnestly asked the government to support the families who have lost their loved ones from the coronavirus disease by burying them with dignity.
