Tambua Solutions helps you verify the authenticity of medicine before purchase.

You can verify the authenticity of medicine at the point of purchase thanks to a new mobile app developed by a Kenyan.

The app dubbed Tambua Solutions uses a barcode scanner to verify if a drug is genuine or not and in the process is helping safeguard safety and health.

The World Health Organization (WHO) approximates that 10% of the Global pharmaceutical market consists of counterfeit drugs, but this estimate may exceed 50 percent in some countries.

In Kenya, a media report in 2017 quotes the Anti-Counterfeit Agency as saying that as much as 40% of all malaria drugs in the market could be counterfeit.

This and other cases of people complaining about counterfeit or substandard medicines drove Tambua solutions to innovate and enable consumers to get expiry dates and manufacturing details of drugs they seek to purchase.

The startup, which gained about 40,000 consumers in its prototype and mentoring stage currently uses the smartphone’s camera capabilities to scan QR codes that are universally printed on products and then instantaneously offer feedback on the details of medicine.

The start-up is working with several government agencies involved in fighting such vices as the drug regulatory authority that is the Pharmacy and Poisons Board to help with verification and classification.

Currently, Kisumu-based startup mainly targets merchants in Kisumu and Nairobi but plans to expand services across the country.
