137 people test positive of Coronavirus
The overall disease burden in the country now stands at 3,594 from 115,336 the number of samples tested so far.
Speaking in Nyeri while making the daily Covid-19 briefing, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe noted that from a pool of 459 samples tested in Nyeri only (9) nine people tested positive. Three of the positive cases are health care workers who contracted the virus during the normal course of their duty.
Kagwe applauded the health workers for their devotion and commitment to duty saying they are our heroes in this fight and he will spare no effort to ensure they are adequately protected.
The legislator said that even as we focus on the global pandemic, there are other diseases like non-communicable diseases that the ministry is aware of their magnitude in the country.
The ministry has however prioritized prevention and control of the NCDs in its Kenya Health Policy 2014-2030. Among the areas of focus of the policy is a strategic partnership with county governments and other stakeholders as it implements best buys as enshrined in the NCD strategic plan of 2015-2020.
Nyeri County is one of the high burden counties for NCDs with close to half of the deaths in the county caused by NCDs and about 700 new cancer cases annually. The county was selected as one of the Universal Health Coverage pilot counties due to its high NCD burden.
